VARICOSE VEINS

Varicose veins are enlarged, bulging veins in the lower extremities caused by poorly functioning valves.

Symptoms of varicose veins include:
• Pain, heaviness or tiredness in legs
• Swelling of ankles or lower legs
•“Rope-y” veins under the surface
• Skin discoloration and dryness around ankles

Treatment for varicose veins includes conservative management, sclerotherapy, microphlebectomy, endovenous laser ablation, and ligation and stripping.  The specific treatment is dependent on the severity of the varicose veins.  Conservative management consists of wearing compression stockings, elevating the legs and taking oral anti-inflammatory medication.  This therapy may reduce the symptom of varicose veins but it will not eliminate the underlying cause.
