The treatment of large varicose veins has advanced significantly in the last five years. Previously, most large varicose veins were treated through an in-hospital operative procedure commonly known as “vein stripping.” This procedure removes the veins but the postoperative recovery is painful and prolonged.
Large varicose veins can now be eliminated through an office-based procedure known as endovenous laser ablation. The laser does not remove the affected vein but actually seals it closed, preventing blood from pooling in it.
The endovenous laser procedure is a highly effective and safe treatment. The post procedure recovery is usually uneventful, with patients experiencing minimal discomfort, bruising or swelling. Patients are able to return to normal activities within several days.
Dr. Golan is an expert in area of endovenous laser ablation and was the first vascular surgeon in the Chicago area to perform the procedure. He teaches dozens of physicians in the endovenous laser technique every year and his expertise is sought for clinical seminars throughout the Midwest.
